Abstract
Unbeknownst to the majority of Americans, tens of thousands of American horses are condemned to slaughter for human consumption every year. This is despite the fact that public opinion in the U.S. holds that horses are animals that should not be eaten. The discrepancy in public awareness and education on the topic has led to negative consequences for both equine welfare and human health and safety. By reviewing numerous documents and resources regarding the history, methods, and legislation of horse slaughter, I have created an educational resource for the general public on what horse slaughter is and the importance of increasing public awareness on the issue. Increasing public knowledge on the topic of horse slaughter is the main solution to motivating government bodies to address issues of equine welfare and human food safety.
